Where Planes Pass Closely Overhead

Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Freestyle”

Many ride in the jet fumes.

This is a famous scene on the Island of Saint Martin/ Sint Maarten in the Caribbean.

The runway to the airport is just on the other side of the road from this beach.

It’s exciting to see the planes come in as they fly so close to the ground, but the ultimate thrill is to stand on the beach directly behind the huge airplanes when they take off.

They slowly taxi down the runway, and you can actually wave to the people inside the plane, as the plane turns around to get itself set for take-off. After a few moments, the engines roar to life, and the jet blasts are strong enough to send you flying into the water.

I will admit, we never did partake. We really didn’t like the thought of choking back a bunch of fumes coming out at us full force. It looked like people had a lot of fun doing it though.

Saint Marten is an interesting island. 40% of it is Dutch-owned, and 60% of it is French-owned. As you drive around the island, you can clearly see the distinction between the 2 different cultures, and you don’t have to pass customs to go from one side of the island to the other.
