Partner Profile: Krousar Thmey (Phnom Penh, Cambodia)

Skateistan works with multiple partners worldwide in order to engage with more children and increase the accessibility of our programs. Through this new feature, Partner Profile, we shine the spotlight on a partner each month.

In January, we began a new partnership in Phnom Penh with Krousar Thmey, a local NGO championing accessible education throughout Cambodia. Founded in a Thai refugee camp for Cambodians in 1991, Krousar Thmey has developed the only program in the country offering comprehensive education for deaf and blind children that follows the national curriculum. Our Educators head to their school once a week to run sessions (watch the short video to see what it looks like here). Tin, our Programs Manager in Phnom Penh, interviewed Men Sovan, Manager at Krousar Thmey, to ask his thoughts on the partnership.

“We have been working with many organizations that focus on sports, but never with skateboarding, so we were excited to become partners. Skateistan has been so appreciative of the work we do, and their Educators invest themselves to develop communication skills with our community using our sign language.

We trust Skateistan. We are watching our kids becoming more confident, so we are not afraid to let them practice skateboarding. While we understand that skateboarding can be dangerous, so too are other sports, as well as daily life. When our kids overcome their fears, they can succeed.

The first time Skateistan visited our school, it was unbelievable for us. We had never seen a skateboard as a tool to empower kids. Now we see how our kids grow from skateboarding as they learn. The kids really love it. When Skateistan’s Educators arrive, our kids meet them at the front gate of our school and run to the classroom to skate.

A big thank you to Skateistan for letting us participate in the Skate and Create program. We are proud to be partners.”
