So you’ve been to your local haunted house and you’re not impressed. Ready to up the ante? Here is a list of 10 haunted houses worth the trip. Consider yourself warned — we don’t want this to come back to haunt you!

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary

Named #1 Haunted House in America by Forbes, this former prison includes six haunted attractions — ranging from the “Blood Yard” to the ominous “Quarantine 4D”.

Dallas, Texas: Thrillvania

With a history that goes back to 1901, Thrillvania is hosted in Verdun Manor, home to a werewolf and vampire, whose presence can still be felt by visitors to the site. Sitting on 50 acres of land, Thrillvania has three different attractions — try one, or try them all.

Nashville, Tennessee: Nashville Nightmare

Not only does it include three separate attractions, but Nashville Nightmare also gives visitors the chance to try their hand at a series of Mini Escape Games — go with a group and you’ll have five minutes to sort out the clues and hope to get out of the haunted room in time!

San Diego, California: Haunted Hotel

Pick your (haunted) poison: indoor or outdoor spooks? Haunted Hotel leaves the option up to you. Indoors, you’ll encounter zombies, mutants, and the chilling “Chaos Hallway.” Opt outside for the “Haunted Trail”, a mile long trek through twisting oaks and pines to the Experiment Maze.

Stone Mountain, Georgia: Netherworld

If you want movie-like quality haunts, head to Netherworld, outside Atlanta, Georgia. The creators come from film and television backgrounds, and the special effects and actors are a testimony to that. This haunted house is multi-level — because one floor of screams wasn’t enough!

Lee, New Hampshire: Haunted Overload

Located on a farm in New Hampshire about two hours outside Boston, Haunted Overload gets bonus points for creativity with it’s larger-than-life sets (some standing over 30 feet tall), and unique costumes. There are three levels of fear, so you can test your nerves with the Day Haunt before launching into the full Haunted Overload.

Pontiac, Michigan: Erebus Haunted Attraction

If a tower of terror is what you’re looking for, head to Pontiac Michigan (about 30 miles outside Detroit) for the Erebus Haunted Attraction. These four stories of fear have been featured on the Travel and Discovery Channels, and for good reason — it was the largest walk-through haunted attraction in the Guiness Book of World Records from 2005–2009!

Lake Dallas, Texas: Dan’s Haunted House

You won’t see any zombies, clowns, or chainsaws at Dan’s Haunted House outside Dallas! This unconventional fright fest focuses on a Japanese theme, and in their words, “we just choose to bring a different way to scare the ever living bejeebers out of folks.” We’ll leave it at that, and let you discover the rest for yourself.

Litchfield, New Hampshire: Nightmare New England

There’s something for everyone at Nightmare New England — boasting five different attractions across 80 acres of land. And that’s not all — you can play a game of zombie paintball, check out a spooky tarot card reading, or visit the Monster Midway while you’re there!

Sleepy Hollow, New York: Horseman’s Hollow

You may remember “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” — Horseman’s Hollow is set at Philipsburg Manor and takes you on the same journey the infamous Ichabod Crane traveled. Watch out for rolling heads!
