Sketch 56 — New Features Worth Typing About
Making an excellent design tool even better is challenging work. The newest version of Sketch app introduces lots of improvements and one feature that all users of UI Libraries using Symbol overrides will love!
First, let’s see what is new, improved, or fixed in Sketch 56:
- Edit text overrides on the Canvas — thanks to this feature you do not have to jump to the right pane of Sketch to modify the text of your Symbols. Just double-click on a text in a Symbol and You can type directly on the canvas.
- Smart Distribute Upgrade — Now you can control spacing of grids. Thanks to “Tidy” button everything will happen automatically. What’s more you can now use it for grouped layers. Smart Distribute now also supports negative space so that the layers can overlap each other.
- Save documents to Sketch Cloud — Now you can automatically save and open all your files via Sketch Cloud.
- Text layers can auto resize horizontally or vertically to fit the content.
- Updated appearance of text layer resizing controls
- More faces in Sketch Data Plugin
- Layer measurement improvements
- Wider menu in the Inspector
How to use text Overrides on the Canvas
I was prepared to make long writing, but when I tried to use it on my own, it turned out to be insanely simple and intuitive.

So, the only thing you have to do to edit content is to double-click on a text of a specific Symbol and start typing. It’s that simple and convenient!
How to align Grids with Smart Distribute.
First, let’s look how it works:
To change distance of elements in a grid, select the group of layers and manipulate handles (or enter values manually) — that’s all, very simple.
However, if you have elements that should be placed in a grid, but they are not… use the special button “Tidy” that will align all layers auto-magically! Then you can easily manipulate both handles for vertical and horizontal alignment or simply enter distances in the right pane.
Now it’s time for you to check the latest update improvements. Sketch Team has again shown that the tiny features may be a huge improvement of designers workflow. 👏 👏 👏
