A few dozen minutes ago, Apple released iPadOS 16.1 to the public after a long wait. This is the first ever version of the new iPadOS available to all users since the system was delayed, along with macOS Ventura.

The new iPadOS 16.1 indeed brings many exciting features. Anyway, most of them are identical to the features available in iOS 16. So in this article, we’ll look together at five great tips in iPadOS 16.1 that you should know.

Display modes

Suppose you own a 12.9″ iPad Pro 5th generation or newer, 11″ iPad Pro 1st generation or newer, or iPad Air 5th generation or newer. In that case, you can scale the display to increase the display's pixel density to show more content at once. If you’d like to activate this new feature, go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Display to activate the More Space option.

Another new feature in display modes is that you can have the 12.9″ iPad Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display reference colours that are responsive to colour standards and video formats. And if you have a Mac with Apple Silicon, you can connect this iPad Pro to it using Sidecar and reference colours.

Weather app

After an interminable wait, we finally got the native Weather app we’ve been waiting for forever in iPadOS 16.1. In an interview a few months ago, Apple let it be known that it has so far failed to create an ideal Weather app for tablets that it’s happy with. So given that statement, Weather on iPadOS 16.1 has to be great — and it is.

Weather shows you all the information you need on your iPad, clearly displayed on a large screen. There are hourly and 10-day forecasts, detailed information in the form of graphs, and much more. We’ll cover iPadOS 16 weather in the coming days and show you all the new features.

Collaboration

You’ve been able to share and collaborate on content on Apple devices for many years. In the new iPadOS 16.1, Apple has decided to improve these capabilities even more and finally wrapped up the whole feature and called it Collaboration.

So whatever new operating system you have, you can make the most of Collaboration. For each collaboration, you can newly set all sorts of permissions to specify precisely what other users can do and much more. So the next time you want to collaborate with someone, take note of these new options.

Stage Manager

The main new feature in iPadOS 16.1 is undoubtedly Stage Manager, which finally brings a proper form of multitasking to Apple tablets. Not that we can’t work in multiple apps simultaneously on the bottom of the iPad, but the truth is that Stage Manager takes multitasking up several levels.

It worked best for me when I connected the iPad to a larger external monitor, which can feel like macOS in some ways. However, this feature for using the extended monitor with the iPad has been removed in iPadOS 16.1 for development reasons. It won’t be available to the public until a future update.

To enable Stage Manager, you must open the Control Center and tap its icon. You can then turn it off in the same way.

Other new features are identical to iOS 16

Since iPadOS 16 is an offshoot of iOS 16, it naturally has many common features available across both systems. These include editing and deleting sent messages, restoring deleted messages, scheduling and cancelling an email, or reminding you to send it again.

Cropping an object from the foreground of a photo, setting up to 15 stops when planning a route in Maps, a redesigned Home app or Family Sharing section, and much more. So below are a few articles where you can learn more about these new features. We’ll look at them in more detail in the coming days.
