At today’s unveiling of the new iPhone 14 (Pro) series, Apple dedicated part of the presentation to SIM cards. SIM cards are an integral part of mobile phones, and they’re the ones that can connect us to the outside world. But the truth is that they are slowly dying out.

On the contrary, the so-called eSIM or electronic SIM card segment is seeing a growing trend. In this case, you do not use a classic physical card but have it loaded into your phone directly and electronically, which brings several advantages. In such a case, it is easier to handle, and the eSIM leads the way in terms of security.

If you were to lose your phone or have it stolen, there is virtually nothing you can do to prevent someone from removing your SIM card from your phone. This is exactly the problem that falls with eSIM. It’s no wonder that this industry is enjoying the aforementioned growing popularity.

After all, as GlobalData analyst Emma Mohr-McClune stated in early 2022, replacing SIM cards with newer eSIMs is only a matter of time. And by the looks of it, that time has already come.

In the U.S., eSIMs are the only ones left.

What about Europe?

When Apple unveiled the new iPhone 14 (Pro) series, it came with some interesting news. Only iPhones without a physical SIM card slot will be sold in the United States, forcing Apple customers to do so with an eSIM. This rather major change has naturally raised a lot of questions. How will the iPhone 14 (Pro) fare in Europe, for example?

For apple buyers here, the situation has not changed for the time being. Apple will only sell the new generation without a physical SIM card slot in the US market, while the standard version will be sold worldwide. However, as we have already mentioned above in the words of the analyst of GlobalData, the question is not whether the situation will change here, as opposed to when it will happen. It is just a matter of time.

However, no further information is available for the time being. However, it can be expected that the tech giants will gradually push the world’s operators to resort to these changes. In fact, for phone manufacturers, such a change may represent an interesting benefit in the form of free space inside the phone.

Although the SIM card slot doesn’t take up much space, it’s important to remember that today’s smartphones have several miniature components that can play a rather crucial role despite their small size. This free space could be used to move technology and phones forward.
