Since it’s inception women’s day has been about equality, liberty, equal opportunities and rights. However, the societal quandaries are so deep-rooted that a day of celebration is not merely substantial enough. This is a massive global problem, and we have just touched the surface. We still live in a repressive society where a woman is meant to be first and foremost a good homemaker. Women are still known by their relationships — mother, wife, sister, and so on. We women can be so much more; we can be so much better.

However, the expectation from a woman is so high outside of work, that sometimes letting go is the only option. Every woman has to surpass these qualms. To solve this, men have to come forward and treat women as their equal. Household chores and bread earning should be divided equally.

To be equal breadwinners, women have to be as competitive if not more as men. The percentage of women in senior management in any industry is still below 20%. Even today women earn far less than their male counterparts which lead to their job being just a hobby or a little extra income. We have to break the shackles of tradition and go a step further. A woman’s career is as important as man’s and to prove this we women have to go the extra mile and be as competitive as our male counterparts. To be truly liberated, women have to seek opportunities.

Women! A mediocre job won’t cut it. Job for the sake of it won’t help. We have to idolise smart women like Indra Nooyi and Arundhati Bhattacharya.

Are we not capable enough? Are we not talented enough? If we look at statistics women are as smart as men, it’s just men are more competitive, and women have a tendency to be content. If the society doesn’t present you with opportunities, don’t wait for it ladies. Go and grab one for yourself.

Being a feminist myself, I define feminism in one word — Equality. Equality is the only thing that we need. We do not need any added advantage or benefits. All we need is an extra opportunity.

We are in dire need of women joining the workforce; it is the only way we outgrow our GDP and truly move towards becoming a developed country. We have been talking to many companies(Startups, Large enterprises, fast-growing companies) and most of them are in dire need of diversity in their workplace.

Skillenza is a company that solely believes in equal opportunities. On this fateful occasion, we as a company have decided not to celebrate Women’s day. Our society needs a movement and not a day of celebration.

We are creating a community of Women we are calling it XX(as in the Chromosome). X also stands for any skill or talent you have, or you want to acquire. We will host several exclusive activities throughout the year. Activities like meetups, hackathons, online hackathons, coding challenges, designing challenges and even simple get to know each other coffee sessions.

We know our effort is just a drop in the ocean, nevertheless it’s a start and with the hope of snowball effect and I urge all my women professionals to join us and to #proveyourself.

Come and join this movement until the day women are as competitive or rather more than men; until the day we are all equal (in the truest sense).

We are also launching Red Hat inclusive hackathon — Bit by Bit: Mind your Byte.

Celebrate Womanhood round the year and not just for a day.
