Skills Matter in New York, too

Yesterday, after almost a year of getting our global expansion plan ready, Skills Matter launched its first 2019 NYC Conference:

FullStack NYC 2019: The conference on JavaScript, Node & The Internet of Things.

Why FullStack?

Having one of the most in-demand roles around the world, Full Stack developers need to keep up with the high pace of technological change that is synonymous with the digital economy. It is fundamental for them to find spaces to learn, collaborate and create solutions to their most pressing challenges.

Demand for our FullStack London conference has been consistently increasing over the past five years. After receiving over 700 attendees in London this year, we now feel it is the right moment to bring the conference to other locations to help us in our goal to grow a global network of FullStack developers.

Why now? Why in the US?

Skills Matter has run thousands of tech events in the UK over the last decade (including some of the biggest in Europe), hosting meet ups, workshops, conferences and courses at one of the most popular tech venues in London, CodeNode. We have grown into a stable community-centric business, with a footprint in the UK that now allows us to expand our activities internationally.

We are constantly learning what tech communities and businesses need — developing our global Tech Experts network and creating ways for them to have trusted spaces to engage and collaborate. It sounds simple, but it can become quite complex.

As we continue to deliver a range of collaborative opportunities for those in tech, and record and share for free the contents of our conferences and meet ups (via our SkillsCasts videos), we are able to use our data to glean which locations are most receptive to our content. The US has always been on the top of our list, so now we have invested resources to almost double our team in order to accomplish this challenge in 2019.

Why does it matter?

These days, it is especially important for tech-driven businesses to stay engaged with their networks for three main reasons:

  1. Understanding the challenges ahead. By taking time to attend conferences, meet ups and expert-led courses, companies get a real feeling for the most important changes occurring in their industries, and can adjust their strategies accordingly.
  2. Becoming a thought leader to attract and retain talent. By participating in learning activities, companies get huge exposure to their target audience. There is nothing more attractive for developers than a company that spends resources in sharing what it has learned and investing in its talent.
  3. Acquiring users of their core technologies. Companies sometimes need to explain to the developer community why their technology is so attractive when compared to others. It is often the strength of a community surrounding a technology that drives its growth, not the technology itself.

Skills Matter has developed a model over the years that allows companies to connect with the main tech communities related to Coding, Data, Ops, Architecture, Quality, Agility, Discovery, Mobility, Diversity, Exploration and Leadership, in a non-intrusive, community-centric model.

We believe developers need physical spaces like CodeNode to connect, exchange ideas and develop solutions to their problems, and we are equally committed to building a strong digital network that allows them to thrive.

Our expansion to the US is just the next step in our journey to build a truly connected and active global tech community.
