5 Simple Reasons Why Recruiters Are Not Reaching Out!

Are you looking for your next professional opportunity? I bet you worked hard on preparing your resumé and sent hundreds of emails to recruiters! But, your request has been ignored. The chances are that you are doing simple (or several) things wrong.

If you never heard back from one recruiter and you can't understand why? Read what comes next! Time to read and reflect :)

The E-mails you are sending contain only your Resumé (as an attached file)!

Let's face it! Recruiters receive hundreds of applications for each open position. At most, they will spend 30 seconds looking at your Resumé. A Resumé states what you did in the past and present. They do not highlight your interpersonal skills, your background, your aspirations and how unique you are.

Sending an application, without highlighting all of these and showcasing your motivation is a Red flag for recruiters. It shows that you are applying for the sake of applying, you did not research the company and will most probably not integrate well within the team.

As a fresh graduate or student, your experience is limited. The only way to stand out is the effort you can perform to join that company. Remember, you are most probably in competition with hundreds or thousands of persons that received (almost) the same education, and have the same level of experience.

It is your chance to be different!

Your Resumé and Email contain errors (grammar and punctuation)!

I see this a "lot", and honestly speaking, I don't bother answering application e-mails and Resumé that contain grammar and punctuation mistakes! It may seem brutal. But, writing correct sentences is a MUST for every single position, whether you are a developer, designer, marketer… Recruiters can tolerate speaking mistakes because we are human. But, it's a different story when it comes to writing. You are supposed to write your Resumé and application email at your own pace, collect feedback on it and have enough time to correct any inconsistency it might have.

If you don’t do this, recruiters will think that this person is not detail-oriented and can’t deliver a clear message to colleagues and clients.

Every action you do during this process gives an idea to recruiters about your skills, abilities and behaviour.

Your Resumé did not land in the right place!

If you read carefully the job description, companies ask you either to apply via a platform or to send your application to a specific email with a specific subject for each open position.

It's simple, right!

Just do as they ask 'cause otherwise, your application will be lost among the +100 (or +1000) applications they receive. Recruiters filter applicants according to the e-mail's subject that they enforced in the job post. If you don't follow the guidelines, you will never receive an answer from them :)

Even if they go through your email, most probably, your way of doing things will be considered as a Red Flag 🚩 from recruiters.

And, what if I know someone in the company that could push my application? Well, in this case, follow the procedure and send your application according to what is asked and then, contact your acquaintance to emphasise your application.

You sent the SAME Resumé and E-mail to all recruiters on your List.

🚩 Red Flag!

This is the one thing that can make your application go to the trash and never hear from your recruiter again. Don’t do this!

When you send your Resumé via e-mail and write your body, make sure to personalize your message to every single company you are applying for. The same goes for your Resumé.

Recruiters hate applications that are too broad and generic. Your e-mail will sound boring and you are showcasing that you did ABSOLUTELY no research on the company.

Again, this will showcase that you are a lazy person that has no interest in working or joining any company. You are just doing this for the sake of doing it! Why shall you expect recruiters to reach out to you with a positive or negative answer, if you are not showing any interest?

Sad, but your profile does not match the job description :(

It may happen and you need to accept that your profile does not match the profile the company is looking for. Don’t take it personally! It doesn’t mean it’s a NO for joining the company. They may reach out to you for another position.

Though, you need to make sure that in your Resumé and email, you are highlighting the skills that are needed to execute the required tasks. We are not asking you to lie on your Resumé, but to showcase some skills that you have that match what is asked.

If they are asking for a good communicator, showcase that one time you participated in a national debate or conference!

To sum up, make sure to send a well-formatted Resumé within a motivational e-mail that is personalised for each job description and following the rules set by recruiters.

Bonus tips:

  • Send your CV in a PDF format, softwares do not read the keyword in your CV if you use another format.
  • Make sure to be true to yourself when writing your email.
  • Don't lie on your Resumé because recruiters will know!
  • Show your motivation.

Good luck ❤
