“Just be who you are” — Maxy Zou

Often when we look for tips or advice on becoming a successful salesperson, we encounter defined instructions, steps, or character traits to build such as being good with people or having excellent communication skills, but in reality, it all depends on your style.

According to Maxy Zou Sr. Account Strategist at Google, there is no one character you need to have as a salesperson, or specific instructions that you need to follow, or a certain kind of person that you need to become rather it’s all about being yourself, making the best out of your talent, and then optimizing it to make you a good sales.

So, you can have different styles. For example, you can be a data-driven salesperson that uses data to convince, or you can be more of a socializing salesperson that relies on socializing with clients to build up that emotional connection, make them your friends, and then sell them products.

Moreover, to be successful as a salesperson, your purpose has to be :

Making your clients grow as big as they can along with your revenue growing and thus nurturing each other.

At Google, sales are a little bit different from usual even with the choice of words as it’s called strategies because sales help to manage a lot of strategy-related work between clients and Google. Sales jobs at Google are not restricted to convincing clients to spend more on the Google platform or buy more products from Google. The real goal is to build up a connection and a joint relationship between clients, then help them to do their business right.

When it comes to the sales cycle, our expert stated that it is diverse in today’s world as we sell with different strategies and purposes. For instance, relationship-driven sales and project-driven sales have different cycles. There is a general cycle for sure, but it changes all the time. (You can check one of our previous articles to get the idea.)

The general one includes 5 steps:

Planning,

Sales,

Easy next step,

Tracking,

Adjusting.

Changes depend mainly on the objective and style of the sale and the person in charge of it.

So, the number one advice to become a successful salesperson is just being yourself and going through your own journey using your unique style.
