What is Follicular Eczema?

Follicular eczema is the term of a chronic skin condition — like, atopic dermatitis — with reactions that occur in the hair follicle. Atopic dermatitis occurs when your skin’s outer layer is unable to protect you from external threats, such as allergens, bacteria, or other irritants.

According to the national eczema association, the exact cause of follicular eczema is unknown, but you may be more at risk if there is a history of asthma, hay fever or eczema in your family.

Symptoms of Follicular Eczema?

Because it occurs in hair follicles, follicular eczema reactions tend to look like goosebumps that won’t go away. Hair in the affected region may stand on end, and inflammation can show up as redness, swelling, itchiness, or warmth.

Other general symptoms of atopic dermatitis include:

a rash on the face, hands, feet, arms, or legs
itching
cracked, dry or scaly skin
crusty or weepy sores

Causes

Follicular eczema can be caused by stress, poor diet, weather changes, allergies and illnesses such as asthma. Follicular eczema is incurable, therefore it is best to manage these possible risk factors before the condition worsens.

Who is prone to follicular eczema

If you’re looking for something to blame, then blame genetics because it’s generally accepted to be an inherited condition which can unfortunately cause break-outs over the course of people’s entire lives. That being said, your genes can only be held partially accountable when one’s lifestyle is less than adequate for good health.

Although anyone can have symptoms of follicular eczema, women seem to have higher rates of this condition. But like all individuals with eczema, those with follicular eczema also need to give extra care and attention to maintaining a healthy body.
