Humans migrate, sometimes for no apparent reason. Nigerians and Africans generally, mostly move due to the poor state of the African economy, you know, trying to find greener pastures and shit. However, blacks tend to succeed no matter where they are or where they tend to find themselves. You probably already knew people like Wale, Michael Blackson, Ositadimma Umenyiora, have a Nigerian descent, here are some other popular celebrities you never knew were Nigerian.

  1. Sade Adu.

The ever amazing Sade Adu is British-Nigerian singer-songwriter, producer, part-time model and fashion designer. She was born in Oyo State, Nigeria and later moved to London with her mother after her parents’ divorce. She is popularly known for her captivating soul and smooth jazz music. She is loved by everyone.

2. Jidenna.

He is the classic man. Jidenna is an American recording artist and record producer. His father was a professor and his mother, an accountant. Although, not born in Nigeria, Jidenna lived part of his earlier life in Enugu State, Nigeria but he and his family moved back to America after suffering a kidnap attempt, things were a little bit rough, eh?

3. Mobolaji Dawodu.

Mobolaji Dawodu is the fashion editor at GQ magazine. He had worked previously at Fader Magazine, Details and Style.com. Although hailing from the States, his father was a Nigerian fashion designer. The always-hat-wearing handsome man who loves to travel a lot is presently rumoured to be in a relationship with Kenyan actress, Lupita Nyog’o.

4. Ross Barkley.

Yes you heard that right. Ross Barkley is an English professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Premier League club Everton and the England national team. Although, his skin colour is very much white, his father, Peter Effanga is very much black and a Nigerian man. So you could consider Ross to be Nigerian by descent, right?

5. David Uzochukwu.

David is a Belgium based Austro-Nigerian photographer. He is very young and talented, he is 17. He claims to have gotten all his photography skills from the internet. He is popularly known for shooting FKA Twigs in a global campaign for Nike Women.

6. Tyler, the Creator.

Although, having funnily loudly acknowledge his Nigerian descent by calling his dad a Nigerian bastard in his Tamale music video, people somehow miss that part.

7. Ugo Mozie.

Ugo Mozie is a fashion stylist and creative director from Nigeria. He was born in Enugu State. He moved to America with his family at the age of three. He got his first modelling job with the help of Jay Z and since then worked for various fashion brands and mags. He has also styled music celebrities like Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and African act, Wizkid.

8. Sonny Digital.

Sonny Corey Uwaezuoke popularly known as Sonny Digital is responsible for producing some of your most favourite hip hop tracks. He is also partly responsible for the rise to fame of some artistes like Future, ILoveMakonnen, and Young Thug. He and his clique, Metro Boomin. Southside and TM88 can be considered as great influential developers of Atlanta’s trap hip hop sound that employs a great use of the 808 drums.

9. Michael Uzowuru.

Also known by his nickname, Uzi, Michael is another influential producer in hip hop music. He is associated with acts like Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Vince Staples, Vic Mensa, Earl Sweatshirt, Kanye West, among others. He hopes to create a world free of ignorance and hate, where people feel connected and not alone with the help of his music.

10. Skepta, JME and Julie Adenuga.

Grime’s most loved siblings, Skepta, JME and Julie Adenuga have come a long way trying to help popularise the grime culture of the UK. While Skepta and his brother JME are rappers and sometimes producers, their sister Julie is a DJ whose beloved voice used to come through Rinse FM, most times, but now she works for Beats 1 radio. They would tell you they’re from London but they are actually from Ogun State, Nigeria.

Nigeria, obviously holds and births a lot of creative people as you can see as there are a whole lot of them in entertainment, sports, music, fashion, science and technology, etc. Other celebs of Nigerian descent worthy of mention in this article are OG Maco, Dot Da Genius (Kid Cudi’s WZRD partner), Chiwetel Ejiofor, Chi Modu (a renowned hip hop photographer), etc. If I continue to list all these guys, I probably wouldn’t be able to stop so enjoy these ones for now.
