Behind the Scenes: Skrumble Company Culture

At Skrumble HQ, we believe that our company culture is defined by the ethos that ‘together, we are stronger’.
As we strive to foster connected teams in the workplace with your business, we make it our mission to do the same within our own team.
Following the 3 main steps that we discussed in Why is company culture so important any way? we will explain our company culture here at Skrumble and how we have worked that culture into our daily routines.
1. Define a mission statement and core values.
When our team began to grow, we decided it was time to define our mission. To figure out what we truly wanted to do with Skrumble and how we wanted to help people and their businesses. We came up with a sort of manifesto that we refer to often when we are building our team and when that team is building our software. Our mission, displayed in the image below, is hanging on the wall in our office where each team member can see it.

2. Building the core values into the practices and principles of the business.
Of course at the beginning, when we were building our team at Skrumble, one of our top priorities was to find individuals with amazing technical skills to build an unbeatable platform. However, along with the technical skills needed to make the magic of Skrumble real, we also needed to make sure that every team member found value in the art of collaboration. Everything at Skrumble is a team effort, and every small step that we are able to accomplish is celebrated by the entire team.

We have translated these company culture ideals into our daily routines, as well. Our tech team has daily check-ins to communicate with one another and learn what is being worked on for the day. We bring special Montreal style bagels and homemade cream cheese every Monday morning. Every time an article is written about us, an influencer tweets about us, or we are featured on another site, that information gets posted on our ‘Wall of Fame’. We celebrate a week of hard work every Friday afternoon with snacks and a happy hour while we sit around and get to know each other better every week. We have a gaming pit when we need a quick break, and we celebrate every birthday with a cake.
3. Choosing a location that helps to nurture your company culture.
Skrumble is growing by the hour and on the journey with us is our amazing team of 20. Which means that we needed to find a space that fit everyone comfortably and left us room to grow. We value open communication, so we strived for a location that didn’t have barriers that separated our team and instead, it would support and help build open relationships amongst team members. We decided to put our developers in the middle of everything and everyone because they are the heart of our team and the rest of us are scattered around room. We made sure to include a formal boardroom for meetings and bringing clients in, but we also included a couch pit for some down time and gaming when we need a break.

At Skrumble, we believe that our company culture doesn’t only benefit our employee experience, but that it helps to enrich our business performance as well. By keeping our team connected and on the same page, we are able to work better, together.
A stronger, more connected team is exactly what we want to help other businesses achieve, which is why we started Skrumble in the first place.
Whether you are just starting out, have been working away without a purpose, or even just starting to brainstorm your business idea, think seriously about what you want your business to become. Think about how you want to make that happen and who you would want with you along the way.
Your culture should directly align with your own purpose and should be something that your entire team can get behind, live with, and support on a daily basis.
Your culture is defined by you, your team, and your business.
So, what’s your company culture?
