Starting a Handmade Movement
In these next episodes made with our friends at Renegade Craft, we feature two retailers, Kerri Lee Johnson and Jill Lindsey who are setting the pace for big movements in Indie retail. The two women are from opposite coasts, but could not be more alike in their vision of bringing neighborhoods together.
Kerri of Marion and Rose’s Workshop started Plaid Friday as a positive response to the unchecked consumerism and tackiness of Black Friday. Jill is creating neighborhood experiences at her Greenpoint store Jill Lindsey that she wishes more retailers to be a part of.
Plaid Friday was meant to be an alternative to “Don’t Shop” movement. Even big box stores like REI who are taking a stand to opt-out of Black Friday, can take a page out of Kerri’s playbook and conceive new ways to make shopping positive again instead of shutting down store in protest.
Over on the the East Coast, Jill Lindsey dreams of bringing neighborhoods together with more in-store events.
“If we up the game for retail, from a shopping experience to a community experience, it would be amazing,” says Jill.
Both women believe that even in the competitive retail, working together is going to expand the pie for everyone.
