A Local Designer Who Showcases Local Designers ~Foggynotion SF
Today we’re interviewing Alissa Anderson, founder of @foggynotionsf. Alissa opened Foggy Notion in 2011 to sell her own work as well as other things she loves, giving her a unique perspective as a Maker and a Buyer! Foggy Notion showcases designers and artists from San Francisco and beyond who create handmade, organic, and environmentally-conscious products.
SKUE: Hey Alissa, thanks for joining us! We’re curious — how has your personal experience as a maker for several years influenced your role as a Buyer and store owner?
ALISSA: I really appreciate the value of handmade goods and the passion behind them! It’s so important to support small businesses and makers so I try to make sure everything we carry is not only awesome but is made by someone we really want to support
SKUE: ❤️ that! On a related note: How do you choose which makers to support and which products you bring in the store?
ALISSA: The whole vibe has to fit with our values & aesthetic, from the origin & quality of ingredients (for apothecary items) to the environmental impact of the packaging & shipping materials to the price point we feel comfortable with. I have very high standards, but it insures I LOVE and can stand behind every product we carry. Frequently our deal breaker is plastic packaging!
SKUE: we love products without plastic packaging too! ♻️ And that’s a great segue for my final question: What are some things you do to increase sustainability at your store and in designing and creating your own products?
ALISSA: Although we are currently a bit on hold from our own line, one of the things we do to increase sustainability (besides carrying reusable products like @togowareand @brushwithbamboobamboo straws) is donate all the bubble wrap we get to local non-profits that need shipping supplies. It really adds up! We encourage all our vendors to reduce their plastic use.
SKUE: great sustainable practices! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat today Alissa 🤗
