“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
— Howard Thurman

at the height of summer, we shall shine
as fireflies in the field
early harvests — gardens yield — goldenrod
and monarchs delight in the milkweed
we’re reminded of all the gifts we’re offered
at the height of summer

and what if we shivered in the spotlight
as wings — the hummingbird healed
work complete — change revealed — flushing blood
and losses slip like shadows in the woods
we’re here to live and love and learn
at the height of summer
