Desk,
Oakwood
That has seen
Love letters from
Tear-stained wars abroad,
birthing a family.
This desk has built empires of
kings and queens, of world-changers. The
Grains of wood that once held the start sits
Now in my room, telling stories of hope.

An etheree based on an old wooden desk that has sat in my grandparents’ house since the ‘70s. My grandma was born and raised in Germany during World War II before meeting my grandfather. My grandpa, the original desk owner, was born in rural KY, served in Korea and Japan, and traveled the country with the National Weather Service. They saw life from many different vantage points and created a beautiful family. This poem represents a grain of wood and heritage from this special piece of furniture.
