oscillating between our hearts
an ax of silence
cuts down slices of tension
until one of us
makes the first move.

we oppose pointlessly
cool butter pieces on hot toast
maybe I’ll give in first,
I usually do,
sometimes you do, too.

now we follow the rules
I sigh and you blink,
I try, you don’t mind,
we smile, yet no words,
new silence endorsed.
