A couple of days ago I received a special package from Los Angeles from our carbon fiber manufacturer of our newly designed alpha version of our Skybot Labs drone racing frame. For some time now, I’ve been hard at work designing our first initial and entry Skybot Labs drone racing product — a new product line series of carbon fiber drone frames called the X-Blur (“X” for the typical quad-motor layout and for experimentation, and “Blur” to signify something very fast as it passes you by that you barely saw). It’s been an interesting process of fine tuning, designing, and building a FPV (First Person View) frame from the ground up that would not only give builders a structural platform to add components in a way that’s open, well balanced, and clean; but also could be used to accommodate Skybot Labs as a standard everyday frame for our own various drone builds in the future. What’s on the market today in terms of racing drone frames felt limited, restricted in terms how I (as a builder) could place components, and more often than not I wanted a product that could change over time with the design; others had to have similar sentiments and a solution to that creativity pain point was needed — enter the X-Blur.

It’s just a drone frame…What’s so special about the X-Blur?

From beginning the X-Blur was designed as a product to allow a builder to have some degree of freedom in their component layout, by racing drone builders for racing drone builders. There’s nothing more freeing than being able to physically design the drone you want, and change it over time to extend its use. Without going in too much in depth the X-Blur is really of two core variant FPV design layouts that are heavily used: the Type-F (Freestyle) and Type-R (Racing), let’s just say we’re exploring the possibilities in new or special configurations.

Other cool things that make the X-Blur unique:

  • Modular Design — the carbon fiber plates are design fit multiple motor layouts and component slots allowing the builder to simply pick out the carbon fiber plate they need for the proposed build with respect to the other X-Blur carbon fiber plate; extending product life and reducing the need to buy completely new frame
  • More component slots — You can never have too much room to screw in or expand your hardware. The X-Blur allows additional hardware slots to let builders put more on at their creative leisure.
  • Environmental — Made from Zero Waste and recycled space industry grade carbon fiber Skybot Labs’ overall carbon footprint is reduced courtesy of our West Coast manufacturing carbon fiber supplier and partner.

What’s Next?

Although the X-Blur is an Alpha version state, we anticipate rolling out both the Type-F (Freestyle) and Type-R (Racing) variants later in Fall 2019 after our flight testing and another round design vetting. It doesn’t stop there though, stayed tuned and follow our publication for news about the X-Blur frames, our full X-Blur drone builds, and drone kits. We will announce when you can purchase our products it right here on the Skybot Labs “From the Lab” Product Blog, our website, and via our official Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter social media accounts.
