GitHub Sponsor Button

If you’re a developer and use GitHub — then you may be aware of recent changes which allow you (as the owner of a repo) to setup a Sponsor button to accept donations for the work you do.

GitHub support integrations with a number of existing donation, sponsorship and payment platforms — but they also let you to setup a custom donations link.

We will use the Custom URL option to setup a Repo to accept Skycoin as a donation.

Design a Sponsorship Page

Before enabling the Sponsorship button, you need to design a page that you can direct people too. The easiest way to do this is to create either a new markdown document within your Repo or create a Gist that you can use across multiple Repos.

To accept Skycoin, use your Skycoin Mobile Wallet to create a Skycoin Payment Request QR Code. Enter the payment details — including the requested amount of $SKY and $SCH.

Take a screen-shot of the QR code and save this as an image to an online location that can be referenced from your GitHub repo. I have a digital-assets repo which I used to store images and other assets such as this.

Enable Sponsorship

Go to the Settings menu in your GitHub Repo. Scroll down to the Features section and click Set up sponsor button.

Enable Sponsorships on your GitHub Repo

This will initiate editing of a new file (.github/FUNDING.yml) in your Repo.

Default GitHub FUNDING.yml

As we are only interested in the Custom option, we need to comment out all other options — add a # character to the start of all the other lines.

Next edit the custom entry and add the custom URL that points to your donation page — see the example below which points to my Donation Gist.

Preview GitHub Sponsorship Link

Commit your changes to the Repo and then go back to your Repo Settings and make sure you checked to enable Sponsorship. You should now see the Sponsorship button appear at the top of your Repo page.

When someone wants to support you the can click the Sponsor button. GitHub will display the Custom URL. When the link is clicked they will be taken to you custom donation page.

Here they can use their Skycoin mobile wallet to scan the payment request QR code and make their donation to you.
