John McAfee will no longer sit on the Skycoin advisory board or stand associated with the project in any official capacity.
Skycoin lead developer Synth today announced via his @notskycoinceo Twitter that the relationship between Skycoin and nefarious cyber security entrepreneur, John Mcafee is being severed following Mcafees public declaration on Twitter that he attempted to have sex with a humpbacked whale.
McAfee started serving on the Skycoin advisory board following a public debate with Synth at the Malta Blockchain conference in 2018 at which Mcafee became so impressed with Skycoin that he had the logo tattooed on his back and entertained the team at his private island. He further vowed to use the Skycoin BBS as the platform for his presidential campaign if the Libertarian party was to nominate him again. Mcafee demands a lot of respect among Libertarians for his intelligence and views on how to bring about a better world as well as for the no-holds-barred style of expressing those views. However, according to an anonymous insider at Skycoin; “His drug fueled demanding demeanour [is] not meant for business”.
Skycoin is not the first altcoin to find favor with the colourful raconteur. Mcafee has a history of shilling and then abandoning coins on a whim. This list includes such notables as Digibyte, Verge, Tron, Stellar Lumens, Syscoin and Doge Coin. All are among the projects that made it onto McAfee’s coin of the week list announced on Twitter. Bitcoin, Monero and Zcash were also noted but not officially touted by him. It has been said that the fastest way to get over someone is to get on someone new and, true to form, McAfee wasted no time in teaming up with a new project. Vibravid’s Beatzcoin proudly announced their partnership with Mcafee via Twitter today.
Skycoin is one of the oldest and most active projects in the crypto space, one of few with a long-term vision and tangible results to show for their efforts up to now. The project, aiming to implement a truly distributed, crypto currency driven, private, secure and community owned Internet, has been under development since 2012 and boasts a testnet rivaling Bitcoin in size with almost 10000 active nodes. Some Skycoin community members criticized McAfee’s appointment to the Skycoin advisory board at the time stating that McAfee is a “loose canon” and that he “doesn’t add value to anything he touches”. They felt that an association with McAfee would sully Skycoin’s reputation. It seems their fears were justified as it could reasonably be argued that his whale sex tweets have all the trimmings of a mad man on designer drugs’ flight of fancy.
The 73-year-old hacker and Libertarian political activist claims in his tweets to have attempted to join an exclusive Maori ritual in New Zealand that involves herding a humpback whale into a channel and then having sex with it. According to McAfee, he wasn’t allowed into the ritual so he attempted to do it on his own. In a follow up tweet, he stated that intercourse with an animal of that size and strength could only be consensual.
