In our fast-paced, digitally-driven world, technology has become an integral part of our daily lives, revolutionizing the way we work, communicate, and navigate the world. From the convenience of food delivery apps to the vast knowledge at our fingertips with a simple Google search, we have witnessed the incredible power of technology in making our lives easier and more connected than ever before. Yet, behind the allure of convenience lies a complex truth — the double-edged sword of technology. As we revel in the benefits of technological advancements, we must also confront the ethical challenges they pose. In this article, we embark on a profound exploration, peeling back the layers of modern technology to reveal its impact on human well-being, happiness, and ethical awareness. Join us as we uncover the delicate balance that must be struck between convenience and ethical responsibility in our increasingly tech-centric world.

Chapter #1 | The Convenience Revolution

The main idea behind technology development is to make human activities easier than before, as we can see in the various technological advancements that have simplified our daily lives. We can order food and drinks through GoFood, find information on Google, and share stories on Instagram. All of these can be done easily by just pressing, typing, and swiping on a screen to get what we want in a short amount of time.

Chapter #2 | Unintended Consequences

However, these conveniences may have negative impacts on humans. Our dopamine hormone is constantly produced as we always get what we want instantly, causing us to lose the true meaning of happiness and get bored easily. Moreover, human memory decreases and even TikTok, which makes it easier for us to watch videos, has narrowed human attention spans, quoted from Forbes magazine. In addition, there is another danger that arises from our constant use of social media which is comparing our lives with others can also lead us to hate ourselves and even cause us to inflict physical harm upon ourselves.

Chapter #3 | Ethical Ambivalence

As a prospective software engineer or any role related to informatics study, I often feel the big dilemma and guilt of the negative impacts that technology has on society. In managing this dilemma, I explore multidisciplinary fields and ethical issues related to technology so that I can speak up my concerns about the potential impacts of future technologies with my colleagues. I also share my knowledge with my family and friends so that we can manage the technology that we use, rather than let the technology control us. Additionally, I listen to and support friends who may have experienced self-harm as a result of social media’s influence.

Chapter #4 | Striving for Tech with Heart

These efforts have been helping me to reduce the dilemma and guilt that I feel while studying in the field of information technology. I hope that both industrial and individual technology developers can consider the impacts of their technology on society and not just focus on business processes and profits. The ethical implications of technology development should be considered to prevent any negative consequences on society.

Outro

In closing, as technology continues to propel us forward into the future, it becomes imperative for all stakeholders, from aspiring tech professionals to industry leaders, to grapple with the ethical implications of our innovations. Acknowledging the potential negative consequences of convenience-driven advancements, we must embrace a holistic approach that prioritizes societal well-being over sheer profitability. By fostering open dialogues, exploring multidisciplinary perspectives, and advocating for responsible technology development, we can strike a harmonious balance between convenience and ethical awareness. Let us collectively steer the course of technology towards a future that empowers humanity, nurtures our well-being, and upholds the true essence of progress.
