I May Be Ultra Successful, But I’ve (Mostly) Never Forgotten Where I Came From

To be me is to be incredibly successful. I’ve started companies, built brands, and revolutionized entire industries. And yes, I’ve made a ton of money along the way. The key to my success is simple. It’s equal parts determination, ingenuity, and reflection. More specifically, I try to reflect on and recognize the role my upbringing had in my later achievements. I try to, mostly, never forget where I came from, as it was, probably, those experiences that helped make me the ultra-successful man I am today.

My childhood was idyllic. Growing up in the snowy mountains of Colorado, most days were spent sledding at the local hill with my mother, father, and brother, George. Those long walks back up the hill after a thrilling trip down taught me early lessons in cost-benefit analysis that I still carry with me to this day. When I reflect on these memories, I remember my older brother George — who the more I think about it — was named Greg, and all the fun we, most likely, had. Those were good times. And I don’t think that those memories are in any way cheapened by the fact that all my childhood photos feature palm trees and beaches, indicating that I probably did not actually grow up in Colorado, but instead in Florida.
