The salad days of our relationship were among the best days I ever had. It was you. It was me. And it was an almost unconscionable amount of salads. We were young. We were carefree. And we were green, both in judgment and in the color of our lips from all of the salads. And yes, much like the leafy greens we were consuming, these days wouldn’t last forever. We knew that our relationship might eventually wilt away like the lettuce of the salads that we loved so much and ingested so often. In the end, that’s exactly what happened. I’ll forever miss the salad days of our relationship when the two of us, together, ate all of those salads.

When I reflect back on our salad days, I think of our first date together. It was, as first dates are, full of awkward silences, nervous laughing, and frivolous smalltalk. It wasn’t until we both ordered the exact same thing, a Greek Salad with extra feta, that the conversation flowed more freely. That night we spoke of favorite television shows, jobs, and, of course, salads and by the end of the night we had agreed to meet up for a second date. On our second meeting, we got more vulnerable, more real, more flirty, and, yes, more salad. This time we went to a local pizzeria, I ordered a Chef and you ordered a Cobb. I offered you a bite of my salad and you instinctively declined, but I could see something in your eyes that…
