Rhode Island is small, but not so small that it’s not a state. It is bigger than Providence, which is the capital of Rhode Island. It is also bigger than a New York City apartment. It is not bigger than other states in the United States. But it is still a state.

Rhode Island’s state bird is the Rhode Island Red chicken. Isn’t that crazy that a bird that contains the name of the state is the state bird? You don’t see a New Jersey Parrot or a Nevada Hummingbird. Suck it, Jersey.

Rhode Island was one of the original 13 colonies. It was founded on the principle of religious freedom, which meant you could be any kind of Christian you wanted! Thanks, Roger Williams!

Rhode Island’s nickname is the Ocean State. That’s because it has over 400 miles of coastline! It’s too cold to go swimming for the vast majority of the year, but that’s the ocean for you. You that you can get to the beach in under 40 minutes from pretty much any point in RI. But you can also hit Connecticut or Massachusetts in the same amount of time.
