Mr. Daniels,

We are writing to discuss your song The Devil Went Down To Georgia. We, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, feel that the song portrays our home state in a somewhat negative light and we take umbrage with many of the points and scenes portrayed within the song.

In the opening, you assert that “The Devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal.” While it is certainly possible that, in the course of searching for souls to steal, the devil may pass through Georgia, we believe it is irresponsible to assert, without proof, that the Devil would specifically target Georgia, a state beloved for its production of the nation’s tastiest peaches. Sure, Georgia would be a more lucrative soul-mining state than say, Alabama since the devil has certainly already collected all of their souls in exchange for Crimson Tide national titles. But if he were looking for a quick score; a place to trick a lot of people out of their souls quickly in order to meet some sort of quota, the logical place to go would be Florida.

If the implication is that the souls of Georgians are more valuable than the souls of folks from other states, then we withdraw…
