Canada will be holding a federal election on September 20th for the first time in almost two years! As an American, your brain juices are probably boiling over with questions, such as “Who cares?,” “Why do I give a shit?,” and “Do you expect me to believe THAT’S how you spell ‘C-A-N-A-D-A’!?”

Today is your lucky day! The following FAQ will provide answers to ALL of your most burning questions about Canada’s electoral system. This should satisfy you until at least our next election, taking place no sooner than this Christmas:

Q: What does democracy mean to Canadians?

A: Democracy is super important to Canadians as it means the opportunity to elect powerful people using doll-size pencils.

Q: Does Canada elect a president?

A: No. Unlike the U.S., Canada has a parliamentary democracy, whereby the party that wins the most seats in the House of Commons has the chance to form a government. The leader of that party usually becomes prime minister. We call this the Westminster system.

Q: Does this have anything to do with the Westminster Dog Show??

A: They are virtually one and the same.
