“I want…” Expressing wishes in Korean -고 싶다 / -고 싶어 하다
How to express wishes or hope of something in Korean?
Sentence structure：
First person (self) / ask questions: Verb Stem + 고 싶다
Third person (he/she/it): Verb Stem + 고 싶어 하다
What is a verb stem? It is the dictionary form without the -다 at the end.
Examples:
- Verb stem of 먹다 is 먹-
- Verb stem of 가다 is 가-
- Verb stem of 놀다 is 놀-
First person — to express own wishes or hope of something / Ask question — to ask what the other person wants to do (-고 싶다)
*Note that -고 싶다 cannot be used for a second person statement since one cannot speak for the second person’s desire. It can only be used for second person questions. If you want to be more polite, add the honorific suffix (으)시.
Verb Stem + 고 싶어요 / 고 싶었어요
Verb Stem + 고 싶으세요 / 고 싶으셨어요
Examples:
1) (저는) 가족들을 만나고 싶어요. = I want to see my family.
→ remove 다 from 만나다 and add -고 싶어요 (Present tense)
2) (저는) 어제 친구랑 밥을 먹고 싶었어요. = I wanted to eat with my friend yesterday.
→ remove 다 from 먹다 and add -고 싶었어요 (Past tense)
3) 어디에 가고 싶으세요? = Where would you like to go?
→ remove 다 from 가다 and add -고 싶으세요 (Honorific suffix (으)시 + present tense)
4) 왜 선생님이 되고 싶으셨어요? = Why did you want to become a teacher?
→ remove 다 from 되다 and add -고 싶으셨어요 (Honorific suffix (으)시 + past tense)
Third person (He/she/it) — to to indicate other people’s wish in both statements and questions (-고 싶어 하다)
Verb Stem + 고 싶어 해요 / 고 싶어 했어요
Verb Stem + 고 싶어 하세요 / 고 싶어 하셨어요
Examples:
1) 언니는 영화를 보고 싶어 해요. = My sister wants to see a movie.
→ remove 다 from 보다 and add -고 싶어 해요 (Present tense)
2) 오빠는 작년에 유학을 가고 싶어 했어요. = My brother wanted to study abroad last year.
→ remove 다 from 가다 and add -고 싶어 했어요 (Past tense)
3) 어머니께서는 산책을 하고 싶어 하세요. = My mother wants to go for a walk.
→ remove 다 from 하다 and add -고 싶어 하세요 (Honorific suffix (으)시 + present tense)
4) 할아버지께서 어제 집에서 쉬고 싶어 하셨어요. = My grandfather wanted to rest at home yesterday.
→ remove 다 from 쉬다 and add -고 싶어 하셨어요 (Honorific suffix (으)시 + past tense)
