What is the difference between the Korean words 또, 도 and 더?
또, 도 and 더 sound very similar. Are they the same? If not, what’s the difference?
또 is an adverb. It’s usually placed on its own before a verb or an adjective. It has the meaning of “again”.
Examples:
또 만나요. = See you again.
오늘 또 늦었어. = I’m late again today.
또 있어요? = Is there more?/ Is there something else?
도 is a particle. It is often used with a noun or other particles (i.e. ~에도、~에게도…). It has the meaning of “too” and “also”. Note: When 도 is connected with other sounds, it slightly turns the pronunciation of 도 to 또.
Examples:
저도 가고 싶어요. = I want to go too.
우리 영화 보고 밥도 먹자. = Let’s go watch a movie, and also have a meal together.
공원에도 갔어요. = I went to the park too.
더 is an adverb. It’s placed on its own before a verb or an adjective. It has the meaning of “more”.
Examples:
이거 더 비싸요. = This is more expensive.
5분 더 기다려 주세요. = Please give me 5 more minutes.
밥을 더 먹을 거예요. = I will eat more.
