SLEEEP Capsule Hotel wins DFA Design for Asia Award

[HONG KONG, 2017] — SLEEEP is proud to be named winner of the DFA Design for Asia Awards 2017 — Silver Award, in the Environmental Design category. The DFA Design for Asia Awards is the flagship programme of the Hong Kong Design Centre, which acknowledges outstanding designs with Asian perspectives, and provides an international platform for talents to showcase their work. Design projects are judged on four criteria — overall excellence, use of technology, impact in Asia as well as commercial and societal success.

The SLEEEP experience is centered around our originally designed, patented, SLPers, and features a tactful use of technology to promote sustainability both in terms of the environment and lifestyle. Although SLEEEP is limited in space, the user experience can be uncompromisingly good with the thoughtful combination of technology and design.

SLEEEP was conceived as a solution to a pervasive but overlooked social problem in Hong Kong — sleep deprivation. “In a city so densely populated with skyrocketing rent, more and more people are driven to reside in areas far from central business districts, leading to an increase in commute time and distance,” explained Jun Rivers, one of the two co-founders of SLEEEP. “At the same time, ever-increasing competition in businesses results in prolonged working hours. These two major factors contribute to a ongoing decrease in sleeping hours and quality, causing people to have foul moods, less tolerance and lowered quality of life. It’s a vicious cycle. SLEEEP intervenes by providing a centrally located haven for the sleep-deprived population.”

The award marks an important milestone for SLEEEP, recognizing the company’s persistent efforts in pursuing sustainability and the synthesis of technology, design and humanity to improve Hong Kong people’s quality of life. “We are most honoured and grateful to have received this recognition,” said Alex Kot, the other co-founder of SLEEEP. “This award has given us confidence to continue our journey with more grit and dedication. We have built from 0 to 1 but our work is far from done, and we shall continue to strive and design what we think is right for humanity.”
