The publication takes its name from Roehampton’s literal Old English translation; ‘the place of the Rook’, thought to be a reference to the large of the birds who inhabit the area.

The anthology’s first issue will contain pieces exploring the phrase ‘’Citizens of Nowhere’’.

‘That was a theme that came out from Theresa’s May speech that was connected to Brexit. She said that if you believe you’re a citizen of the world, you’re a citizen of nowhere” said Dr John Doyle, Principal Teaching Fellow of the Media, Culture & Language Department, who co-founded the publication.

‘’We are interested in submissions that explore Citizenship, National Identities, Place and Space, in response to the wider questions raised by Brexit’’.

The Rook aims to achieve it by means of experimental and literary forms of journalism.

“[We would like to] rethink what journalism is, using journalism in a progressive sense, to start getting away from types of stories that we see in the press that are often problematic. I’d like to see more of a positive vision in the world and use journalism to do that,” said Doyle.

The deadline for final submissions is on the 1st of September and the first volume will be published in winter 2017.
