Chucking the parental shackles to jump the nest and feed yourself is a daunting prospect. To alleviate the apprehension you’re going to want to throw yourself into the teeming social aspect of the university experience.

Consider this article a rudimentary guide the fun side of Roehampton.

BOP (Every Friday)

Think school disco, bad music and gaggles of wavy, intoxicated students. It sounds like a potential catastrophe, sometimes it is, but in reality it’s a recipe for a fantastic night you won’t remember.

Monte Hall hosts the DJ, spinning club favourites with a dash of sing along classics. Students circle, cling and sway whilst belting out a slurred ‘Living on a Prayer’ rendition. The perfect concoction of alcohol, friends and sweat equals a good time.

FEZ (Every Wednesday)

Roehampton’s off-campus foray into Putney’s premier and only nightclub. Running from 10 till 2, a big red bus picks you up at the main entrance and delivers you to the destination. Expect an explosion of college rivalry as Digby and Froebel students scream their anthems throughout the entire journey.

Inside you’ll find the dingy, sweaty Fez room. Pour some two for £5 Jägerbomb’s down your throat and cram onto the dance floor. The Hip Hop and R&B tunes are a welcome respite from BOP and add a little extra flavour to the week.

SUMMERBALL

The biggest and best event Roehampton offers. The university welcomes a host of acts, some better than others, to Froebel lawn for a festival atmosphere party. Fortunately, the line-up doesn’t matter too much. It’s about waving friends goodbye, drinking, bumper cars and the silent disco.

The day is split into two parts and two outfits. Whack on your favourite summer attire for the afternoon and dress up nice and beautiful for the evening. Join the brave, determined and stupid for the survivor’s 5:30am photo shoot… if you survive.

FRIGBY

Without doubt the biggest sporting event in Roehampton’s calendar.

The Digby Lions face off against the Froebel Zebras in a footballing clash of the college titans. This rivalry penetrates the everyday Uni life. The teams host an array of events all year to raise funds, including a drunk and choreographed Magic Mike-esque strip.

On the day, you’ll crack a can as the sun rises and meet with the teams to get your face painted and swallow a stomach lining bacon sarnie. Grab the bus to Sutton FC Stadium where the first match of the day begins; a 1000 army chase and hunt as the annual water fight erupts. Drink and watch the game, celebrate or commiserate and then head back to campus for the Frigby BOP.

FRESHERS WEEK

This is your chance to discover what societies and teams the university has to offer. Roehampton has tons of sports teams but the lack of societies can be frustrating. Look hard enough and you may find a gem. Take the opportunity to mingle and meet the people you’ll share the student experience with.

The week closes off with a blow-out for Fresher’s and, as the uni like to call them, Refreshers. Make sure you pick up a ticket otherwise you’ll miss out.
