The Slock.it Application, now available in Alpha as part of our MVP program

After 2 years of R&D and a successful USD 2m seed round in March 2017, Slock.it unveiled its groundbreaking Universal Sharing Network to the enthusiastic crowd attending Devcon 3, the largest Ethereum blockchain developer conference.

Christoph Jentzsch, our CEO, took the stage to reveal our progress on our ambitious plans for building the next generation of Sharing Economy, rewriting the rules on how objects are shared and enabling any individual or business to monetize their home, appliances or office buildings. Selected developers can join our alpha (MVP) program by clicking here.

Addressing the crowd of hundreds of programmers, Christoph Jentzsch demonstrated a prototype of the Slock.it application, enabling prosumers and businesses alike possible to rent, sell or share any smart object through the blockchain. Because Slock.it software is built on top of the Ethereum blockchain, Slock.it applications are always on, suffers no downtime, features cryptographic security by default, requires no login or signup, and can be audited by anyone.

Holding in his hand a physical prototype of a blockchain-enabled home automation device, our CEO demonstrated how any existing smart object could be connected to the USN without hardware or software modifications. He went on to explain how this device allowed Slock.it to make it possible to rent connected cars, homes, white goods, pleasure craft, etc disrupting the incumbents of the sharing economy by:

  • Making trusting the other party as unnecessary as possible
  • Handling secure direct P2P payments
  • Removing all forms of vendor lock-in
  • Supporting almost any object including cars, lockers, apartments, sheds, office space, etc.

Slock.it highlighted it had already demonstrated a market need for its solution by signing on several engagements and revenue-generating contracts with multiple Fortune 500 companies including Innogy Innovation Labs and Siemens, amongst others.

We’re opening our code to the Trusted IoT Alliance!

The presentation ended on a high note with the announcement that Slock.it was to make its USN codebase available to the Trusted IoT Alliance on an open source basis! By doing so, we are giving the Trusted IoT Alliance enterprise members BNY Mellon, Bosch, Cisco and Gemalto (amongst many others) direct access to state of the art blockchain technology and network effects brought on by the Universal Sharing Network.

We’re making the USN available, open source, to the growing array of leading companies part of the Trusted IoT Alliance

Composed of the leading players in the IoT space, the Trusted IoT Alliance leverages blockchain infrastructure to secure and scale IoT ecosystems. The Trusted IoT Alliance addresses IoT systems operating in heterogeneous and decentralized environments, sponsoring breathrough solutions to challenges in the domain of trust and provenance. “Slock.it’s contribution of The Ethereum Computer brings all the elements of a smart contract connected IoT computers together with the Trusted IoT Alliance collaboration and governance framework. Secure key storage, light client functionality and peer to peer connectivity are basic building blocks of smart contracts bound directly physical objects from door to automobiles.” — Zaki Manian, Executive Director of the Trusted IoT Alliance
