Getting a Career in a Sure Thing

For nearly a century, financial, medical, and federal government workers have seen better wages and lower unemployment than the national average. Choosing a career that has a history of security is a step towards being safe during a recession. The U.S. might be facing one as early as next year. If the predictions are right, are you or your business recession-proof? In May 2019, the U.S. saw just 27,000 jobs created, with unemployment rates expected to rise and personal income growth falling. The current economic status of America has mended itself pretty well following the Great Recession, but the next recession could be more severe than the last. Nearly half of American workers want more job security but if we do fall into a recession, the down economy will bring layoffs, unemployment, and fewer opportunities.

The economy does not have to determine your success. A recession hurts all workers, increasing layoffs and decreasing hiring. A lot of people, especially those who are new graduates, have to face the negative effects of a down economy and are forced into low-quality employment. When a recession occurs, it does not end followed by full recovery from the negative effects. Many workers still feel the effects of a recession after four years. Of course, highly skilled workers may feel fully recovered sooner than others while those who are moderately skilled simply feel improved.

Don’t head into the recession without any security. Share your strengths with your managers, demonstrate leadership, network with professionals, and most importantly, learn new skills. You can increase your value by expanding your skill set. Even if you don’t have a job in finance, becoming a tax preparer as a side hustle or greater can help you stay afloat in any economy.
