What caught his attention?

Not sure if you knew this, but we humans don’t have the greatest attention span. I know! It shocked me too when I found out. We are easily distracted, and focusing on one task for an extended period of time is often agonizing. Now, many of us are able to keep our mind on one thing until it’s done and that’s a great skill to have, but not everyone is like that — in fact, most people (especially millennials) are the opposite. Our future workforce can’t do one task throughout the whole day, it isn’t stimulating enough. We can’t force our employees or our teams to do what doesn’t come natural to them, that’s just being counter-productive. People today are like Dug the Dog from the Pixar film Up. Take a look at the clip is — it not 100% accurate?

We have all become like Dug

Industry is going to have to adapt, employers need to think about how they assign work and how information is delivered. At Soaq, our version of the squirrel is video, since people are easily drawn to it. According to MediaSilo via Digital Sherpa, 80% of visitors to your website would stay on the site and watch a video while only 20% of visitors will stay on it and read text. If that wasn’t enough of a motivator, according to Brainshark, simply using the word “video” in the subject line of an email increases the amount of people that open your email by 19%. I think the numbers here speak for themselves.

People want to watch video, it’s as simple as that. Video is a great way to condense information in an easy to consume fashion. The written word is an incredibly powerful tool, there’s a reason why print and e-books still (and will likely always) sell millions of copies, but in the professional world, video is becoming the best way to communicate with people.

In deep thought…

Try this thought experiment: You just started a new job and have to learn how the company’s regular applications work. Your boss gives you two options to learn how to us them; you can either read a manual with screenshots of the application, or you can watch a video that shows you how to use it. The manual is long, dense and dull. The video has someone narrating and showing you the play by play of how the application works. You might say that I’m embellishing the video option, but in reality, I’m just sharing some of the possibilities of what you can do with video. Which option would you choose?

Video is the future of the workplace. People want to be trained through it, people want to teach others through it and people want to consume it. Video is what we crave and we need to embrace that.
