The 48 buildings that form the Abhuday Nagar federation, in the heart of Central Mumbai at Kalachowkie, were constructed in the 1950s by the housing development board as affordable houses. They are spread over 1.34 lakh sq m of land in Kalachowkie. There are 3,238 residential flats and 172 commercial units.

A cluster of ground-plus-four-storey buildings were constructed for the middle-income group. Each family occupies about 300 sq ft with over 3,410 units of tenements. Spread over 33 acres, this large complex houses separate housing society buildings. It consists mostly of Subsidised Industrial Housing Scheme (S.I.H.S.) buildings and also other structures within it such as BMC schools, Samaj Halls, residential and non-residential areas.

It is currently being considered for a mega-redevelopment project and is one of the largest cluster redevelopment projects in the city’s history. It is also the first among MHADA colonies to go under the newly passed cluster development policy for the redevelopment of old and dilapidated buildings.
