KOLIWADA FISHERMEN’S COMMUNITY / about

Koliwada refers to a colony of Kolis (fishermen).
The history of Worli Koliwada dates back to late 1700s when it was one of the seven islands which were ceded by the Portuguese to England in 1661 and which later formed the modern day Mumbai and have a significant historical and cultural value attached to it.
Worli Koliwada covers approximately 125 acres of land; with the core Koliwada area- a 17th century British Fort , an aboriginal fishing village and other surrounding unorganized developments accounting for 68 acres, and the Coast Guard premises and Adarsh Nagar accounting for the rest.
Euphemistically speaking, it is an affordable housing area. Some people would call it a slum. There are shops, some larger houses and smaller huts, lots of narrow side alleys. Water supply and other facilities are often shared and most houses do not have toilets.
