Topics of Interest
- Detailed research on the creator economy. Share information and tips about the platforms and tools that are used by creators such as Shopify, YouTube, Patreon, and Etsy. Here is a good example of an article about YouTube and one about selling on Etsy. You can also share research about creators themselves, such as demographics and current trends. Check out this Forbes article for an example.
- Shamelessly gush over your favorite small businesses and indie creators. Shine a spotlight on your favorite small businesses and indie creators. Tell readers all about one person or business, including their history and what makes them special like in this post about Elon Musk by Tim Urban. You can also create a list of favorites like in this example that highlights 5 Latinx creators. If you’re a creator, tell readers about your work and the inspiration behind it.
- Tips for supporting small businesses and indie creators. Help others support small businesses by sharing useful tips and tricks like how to support small businesses if you don’t have money and how to write good customer reviews.
- Tips for entrepreneurs, operators, and indie creators. Share the lessons and tips that you’ve learned to improve your small business or creative endeavor. Some examples include tools that improve productivity, “how to” explanations for using social media platforms like TikTok, an explanation of content marketing strategies, and what you wish you knew before you starting your business. You can also share resources to help entrepreneurs and creators find work or network with others like themselves like in this HubSpot article.
- Product and service comparison. Provide a detailed review of products and services to help others make an informed decision about their next purchase. Highlight strengths and weaknesses and indicate the type of person or business who would benefit or enjoy the products or services that you’re reviewing. For example, here’s a detailed comparison of WordPress and Wix. This post comparing Gym Shark and Lululemon leggings is another great example.
- Business breakdowns, frameworks, and strategies. Share your research on a successful business that entrepreneurs can learn from, like in this example about Amazon. Explain the frameworks and strategies used by successful leaders such as Charlie Munger’s Five Simple Notions to Help Solve Big Problems or focus on the framework itself like in this article about Jobs-To-Be-Done.

Submission Guidelines

Pay special attention to Medium’s Ad-Free policies since Small + Mighty is dedicated to supporting indie creators and entrepreneurs, which may be mistaken for advertising. Follow the Do’s and Don’ts below to ensure your content is appropriate for Medium and our publication.
Do’s
- Disclose all affiliate links that would result in you receiving a commission. See this post for a sample disclosure statement. Limit the number of affiliate links to five or less.
- Disclose if you have received or will receive payment, goods or services, or something else of value in exchange for writing your post. View FTC Guidelines for more details.
- Credit all images by including the name of the original creator and a link to their work.
- Include a direct link to the original source of any quotes, facts, or data that are cited in the post.
Don’ts
- Don’t embed images that serve as third-party advertisements.
- Don’t include images of third-party brand logos, services, or products.
- Don’t include images of illegal acts, pornography, violent and disturbing media, or hateful text and symbols.
- Don’t glorify and promote self-harm such as cutting, disordered eating, and suicide.
- Don’t submit duplicate content that has already been published on Medium.
- Don’t present someone else’s work as your own without proper acknowledgement or permission. Read Medium’s Plagiarism Guidelines.
- Don’t impersonate another person or organization in your story or in your personal profile.
- Don’t embed forms to collect data.
- Don’t submit inflammatory business reviews. You can be critical but avoid emotional and nonconstructive criticism.
- Don’t disparage any groups or individuals for any reason.
Style Guide
- The title of your story should be written in title case and a maximum length of 50–60 characters and accurately capture the topic of your story. Read these tips if you need advice or inspiration.
- The subtitle should be written in sentence case and provide a descriptive synopsis to captivate of your story. Read these tips if you need advice or inspiration. Subtitles should be between 100 to 160 characters in length.
- Featured images should be placed immediately after the subtitle and should be horizontal orientation.
- Pull quotes and block quotes may not be used as section headings.
How to Submit a Story
- Comment on this article with your username (not your display name) with the message “please add me as a writer.” For example, my username is @OhhStellar but my display name is Stella.
- Write your story in Medium and then submit it to Small + Mighty by clicking on the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the browser and selecting “Add to publication.” You should see the option Small + Mighty once you have been added as a writer.
- Tags are not required but if you chose to add them, please include up to a maximum of 4 tags. A tag will be added by Small + Mighty to include it under an appropriate subsection of the publication.
- You may meter your story if you desire. Publishing on Small + Mighty does not affect your ability to earn funds through the Partnership Program. Small + Mighty does receive any of the proceeds that you earn from Medium for your story. See Medium’s Partner Program Terms to learn more.
Review and Approval Process
Please allow at least 7 days for review and approval.
If the story is rejected, writers are welcome to resubmit after addressing any indicated issues. If the story is accepted for publication, it will be published within the next 2–3 days between 7:00am and 7:00pm EST.
Conditions upon publication
Small + Mighty reserves the right to make changes to the submission without any notice. Possible changes include revising titles, reformatting, changing a featured image, removing undisclosed affiliate links, and removing visual media entirely. If a writer prefers that the story is accepted as is with no changes, please add the following note in bold text after the title and subtitle (above the featured image): “Author’s Note: Please do not make any revisions to my story without expressed permission.”
