January and February can be difficult months. The excitement and anticipation of December have disappeared, together with the lights and decorations. The cold weather is punctuated by dark mornings and evenings. After the expense of Christmas, you may be on a tight budget and feel as if you don’t have the means to enjoy yourself.

But that’s not true! There are still some things you can do to make the most of these cold, dark months before spring arrives. Here are five free or inexpensive pick-me-ups to give your spirits a lift in January and February.

1. Buy a Reduced-Price Advent Calendar

A great way of having a bit of fun in January is to buy a reduced-price advent calendar and open one of the windows every day — or every other day if you’d like the fun to last into February!

Choose a chocolate advent calendar if you love chocolate or perhaps a more expensive calendar that you couldn’t justify buying in December.

Last January, my daughter and I bought a bath and body advent calendar. We took it in turns to open a window each day and shared the bath bombs, body lotion, mini shower gels and other goodies behind the windows.
