1. When you don’t have all the facts, try to give people the most generous reasons for their behavior

Someone driving annoyingly slowly in front of you? Maybe it’s a mum with a birthday cake on the back seat.

Someone interrupts you when you’re talking? This may seem rude, but maybe they’re doing it because they’re enthusiastic and eager to share their thoughts and ideas, and they worry they’ll forget them if they wait.

Adopting this mindset will gradually make you less reactive and more compassionate. Over time, it will stop you getting mad over the little things

2. Always tell a child their helmet looks cool

Anytime you see a child doing something sensible like wearing a helmet when cycling or cleaning up without being asked to, compliment them!

It will encourage them to make more positive choices, and you will be helping the next generation be a little bit better.

3. When a friend or family member is upset, ask them one simple question before saying anything else:

Do you want to talk about it or be distracted from it?

For me, this is possibly the best piece of advice on this list. In the past, I never knew how to react when someone was down. This little tip solves that problem.

4. After a breakup or even after losing a friend, do 10 things that person would never do with you

This is a great way to remind yourself what you where being held back from doing. It will also distract you from those sad feelings.

5. Never send a work email or ask for a meeting with your boss when you’re emotionally distracted

Type the email as a draft, or note down what you want to say to your boss, then walk away. If possible, sleep on it and then see if you still feel the same when you’re calmer.

You always make better choices when you’re not heated.

6. e.g. and i.e. are not the same thing

e.g. = for example

i.e. = in other words

Not enough people know this.

7. Make a family treasure

Ask each member of your family who is over 50 years old to write down any life advice that their descendants should know in 500 years’ time.

Over time, the knowledge in the book will become more and more interesting and helpful. It will become a valuable family treasure that continues to grow and it will cost you almost nothing. It will also be a great way to learn a little about those close to you and bring you closer to them.

8. If you think you have a good idea, write it down

This is a double-edged piece of advice. The first reason you should do this is because your brain will trick you, and you will think you will remember but you might not. The second reason is that sometimes a great idea at the time isn’t always a great idea later.

For a long time, I wanted a tattoo. I saved a design and kept looking back at it, thinking it was cool. I’m so glad now I didn’t get it!

I also write down every idea for Medium articles I have. Every time I want to write an article, I look at my list and see what inspires me, but sometimes I remove stuff from the list, I don’t know what was going through my mind with some of the ideas I have come up with!!

9. Ask yourself, “Why does this matter to me?”

Understanding why you feel a certain way about something can help you deal with it. If it’s a big problem, this will help you deal with it. But it can also be used for the small things. For example, next time you find yourself judging someone’s poor fashion sense, ask yourself why it matters to you.

This tip will help you to be a more relaxed and kinder person, and less judgmental. It will also help you deal with difficult emotions as you understand why you are feeling them and can rationalize the situation.

I hope you found this list helpful! If you did, please leave a comment below and let me know.

Thanks,

Alfie
