Bribing the Criminals

Cat burglars are making it hard for me to be tough on crime.

Not that long ago, a headline was circulated saying that the Toronto Police said, “To prevent the possibility of being attacked in your home, leave your key fobs at your front door.”

When I read the headlines and stories, I understood what they were getting at, but I was irked that anyone should ever have to be in that situation. In the end, I was just glad to be on my way out of big cities and these kinds of crimes.

Yes, crime does happen in small towns. It happens everywhere. Probably even under rocks in the middle of nowhere. How many bugs have been bugnapped by some kid on a nature hike?

So, this past week, I might have bribed a criminal myself. This neighborhood cat keeps getting into my garbage as I wait for the refuge company to bring me a garbage can. After catching the world’s cutest cat burglar once again shredding my bag, I made him a deal he couldn’t refuse. I put a bowl of kibble and water on the porch so he wouldn’t attack my garbage. So far, it’s working.

Before anyone starts about not letting him be neglected on the streets, trust me. I have tried to win him over and see if he’s anyone’s pet, but he does not trust me — well, not yet, anyway.
