Smarter Cars is a podcast about autonomous vehicles. We’re interviewing key players about the challenges of bringing autonomous vehicles to market, including current thinking about deep learning, policy/regulation, business models, ethics, and the impact on social welfare, economics, cities and the future of how we live and work.

Some questions we’re thinking about include:

  • How do we regulate a technology as it develops without stifling innovation?
  • Who should make the rules?
  • Should regulators require pre-market approval before cars are deployed to the public?
  • Do we need an automated vehicle driving test?
  • How will we know when autonomous vehicles are safe?
  • Should we measure safety by miles driven, miles simulated or a combination of both? How many miles are enough?
  • How much can we rely on deep learning versus rules-based code?
  • If end to end neural networks are used, how will we know why a car crashes or interpret its actions? Will the tools to interpret the AI evolve as well?
  • What will be the winning business models for autonomous vehicles? Will being first to market matter? How many players will the market support?
  • Will people buy autonomous vehicles or just ride in them? Will mobility as a service be the most viable option?
  • Would a Netflix-like subscription model work for autonomous vehicles?
  • What is the best configuration of hardware? Do we need LIDAR? How might LIDAR develop and change?
  • How will it work when one company makes the hardware and another makes the software? Are full stack solutions better?
  • How will we address the concerns around cybersecurity and hacking of vehicles?
  • How will we protect consumer privacy and still manage and share the vast amounts of data generated by autonomous vehicles?
  • How should autonomous vehicles address ethical dilemmas? Should ethics be programmed using rules-based code or AI?
  • What will it take for consumers to get comfortable adopting this technology?
  • How will autonomous vehicles change the way we live, work and travel in cities, suburbs and rural areas?
  • How can cities best prepare for autonomous vehicles?
  • Will we need a tax on vehicle miles traveled to reduce congestion and zero occupant trips?
  • How will public transit needs change?
  • What can we do now to prepare for the real estate, parking, office space and other land use changes that will come with autonomous vehicles?

We look forward to advancing the dialogue on these key issues to help bring this transformative technology to market. Let’s get on with the discussions…
