Statistics of Female Graduates in Engineering and Technology in Nepal
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) occupations are expected to experience rapid growth in the coming decade. But studies have repeatedly reported that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) are perceived as highly male-dominated. Using the data from Nepal Engineering Council (NEC, 2076 B.S) we wanted to take a closer look at female graduates in Engineering and Technology in the hope to highlight the imbalance in the gender gap in STEM subjects at the undergraduate level.
General Outlook for Female Students
According to the recent data provided by NEC, 12% of students who graduated in Engineering and Technology in Nepal are women.
Out of 55,119 graduates students in Engineering and Technology, only 6,837 are female.
Subject breakdown — Female students
Males-dominated undergraduate degrees start in Civil Engineering (91%), Computer Engineering (82%), Electronics and Communication (88%), IT (86%), Mechanical Engineering (98%), and Software Engineering (85%). The only female dominating undergraduate degree in Engineering is Architecture having 58% female graduates.
Fewer than 2 of every 10 Engineering and Technology graduates are female
In this digital age, the demand for STEM graduates far exceeds its supply. This disparity in female graduates reflects a missed opportunity. Addressing the gender imbalance in STEM fields and encouraging more girls into STEM can help fill the gender gap.
