According to a comparative analysis of the world’s smart cities, their core features enables them to be divided into four distinct categories, which will likely impact their planning, according to scientists.

According to specialists from the University of Pennslyvania, smart cities currently being developed across the world are distinguished by new information and communication technologies used to solve issues relating to transport, housing and energy. Each of the four distinct approaches to smart cities requires their own approach to planning and management, according to Science Daily.

Smart cities belonging to the first category are distinguished by the use of mobile networks and digital healthcare. They have a good communications infrastructure in place and prefer to invest in select programs. Examples include Tokyo and Copenhagen.

Those belonging to the second category are cities based on the transport model. They are usually densely populated cities with transportation challenges. Their main concern is the management of emissions, with a focus on clean public transport, car-sharing options, robotaxis and information and communication technologies. Examples include Singapore and Dubai.

Cities falling into the third category are primarily concerned with utilities, with a focus on water supply, sewage and garbage collection, which require appropriate technologies. Examples include Barcelona, Vancouver and Beijing.

The fourth and final category refers to those cities that use information technology to support economic activity. For such cities, the importance of developing digital skills and attracting skilled workers and businesses are critical to them. Examples include Amsterdam, Edinburgh and Cape Town.

In Russia, smart city developments are being rolled out with the aid of international service provider Orange Business Services and a partnership reached with SAP, the world leader in enterprise applications, at the Eastern Economic Forum. In Moscow, smart city initiatives are already being actively being implemented with the support of the Moscow Department of Information Technologies.
