More than 2,500 new Wi-Fi access points have been installed across Moscow’s student dormitories. According to the Moscow Department of Information Technology, free wireless internet is now operational in 152 dormitory buildings across 31 universities, with a total of 10,600 access points.

“Free Wi-Fi helps students to prepare for their classes, source relevant study materials, participate in online courses, and communicate with their professors, peers, and friends and family. An increase in the number of access points will improve the quality and coverage of the wireless network,” said Eduard Lysenko, Head of Moscow Department of Information Technology.

Students of PFUR, MSIIR, MISIS, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, RSUH, Sechenov University, Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, Kutafin Moscow State Law University (MSAL), MIREA and other universities can use the free city Wi-Fi network.

To connect to the city Wi-Fi network, users should select the Moscow_WiFi_Free network, open the browser, and confirm their credentials. This can be done by either entering their details on the official portal of the Moscow Mayor and Moscow Government (mos.ru), or by entering their mobile information and receiving a code via SMS. They will then be able to login to the city Wi-Fi network by clicking on the “Enter

Internet” button. ID verification will need to be carried out once every three months, and credentials will need to be verified once every 24 hours when logging on to the Moscow_WiFi_Free for the first time.

ID verification to gain access to Wi-Fi in public places is mandatory per Russian legislation.

In addition:

More than 18,000 access points are installed across Moscow. Three thousand are active within the Garden ring and the Third Transport Ring, and cover most of the streets in the downtown area.

More than 1,200 Wi-Fi access points are installed across the city’s 43 parks, and almost 3,500 thousand in the city’s cultural institutions. Furthermore, it is possible to connect to the free wireless internet network across 322 libraries (which feature more than 2,100 access points), 204 houses of culture (featuring 944 access points), 16 city museums (featuring 392 access points), 13 cinemas in the Moskino network and within the cinema club of the museum of Eldar (62 access points).

All the existing access points will soon be integrated within a unified city-wide Wi-Fi network, which will ensure a zone of stable coverage. Centralized tech support started operating in 2019 within the unified zone. Its employees maintain the Wi-Fi work and communicate with citizens and guests of the city.

Thanks to the launch of the support hotline, users are directed to one team to report a problem, and no longer need to search for the relevant operator to resolve their technical queries. You can ask questions, leave feedback on the network or your opinion on its development by calling at: +7 (800) 300–69–89.
