Joy Battick is a 63 year old mum at the age of 26 after being recognised by Historic England as part of the BBC’s Black and British season. The commission was formed while the Brixton riots were still fresh in people’s minds. Atherton was looking for models who represented the community. Joy has worked in the Brixton recreation centre for over a decade this interview is with her daughter Natalie and how she feels towards the statue and what it means to her. a quote from joy when the statue was first created was “But we were serious too because we knew it would be on display to local people forever. Now it’s a real Brixton landmark.”
