When Peter Draper, 88, retired sixteen years ago, he wondered what he should do to fill the gap in his time. He decided to begin birdwatching and now aims to see 200 species each year.

Peter regularly travels from his Watford home on trips around the country in order to attain this target. By the second week of 2024, he had already hit 100 for the year and hopes to beat his record of 228.

He says his hobby was crucial while his wife, Eileen, was in care before her death in 2023. “It encouraged me to go out when I would’ve been at home worrying.”

Peter says he hopes to have many more years of birdwatching ahead.
