The Package Free Larder has a mission — encouraging the people of Portsmouth to change their behaviour. It opened in Southsea in March 2019 and is Portsmouth’s first plastic free supermarket.

We spoke to Connie, a volunteer, who wants everyone to have a “more mindful shopping experience” to help the environment, rather than expecting everything on demand.

With one of the worst recycling rates in the UK — the not-for-profit charity is trying to do its bit to move the city up the league table.

Indeed, only 26.7% of household waste is being reused or recycled in Portsmouth. Gosport’s rate is even worse at just 24.8%.This is compared with 64.1% in the leading council, Three Rivers, in Hertfordshire.
