UK expats in Spain, pre and post Brexit

Expats are a growing community in Spain and many expats moved pre-Brexit, this story highlights the problems and stories that expats pre-Brexit face and soon to be expats face post-Brexit.
Since 2021 the number of UK expats in Spain has increased by 7%. But this is not the massive wave of expats that many post-Brexit were expecting. To investigate this, I asked a current expat couple and a soon to be expat about what difficulties they experienced and both pointed towards citizenship as a main issue that has become exceedingly difficult to obtain as well private medical insurance which many brits don’t have in any capacity and the visa system making it harder to escape the UK.
