Makar sankranti is the most loved Hindu festival in India. This festival is the first Hindu festival of the year. Its going to be celebrate on Jan 14 this year. It is also known as Maghi or harvest festival. It marks as the end of winter season and beginning of summer season. It is dedicated to the Sun god. On this occassion, Sun enters the zodiac sign Makar or Capricorn during his travels on its celestial path.

In different ways people celebrate these festival in India. Makar Sankranti come with other famous festivals like Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Biku in Assam and Pedda Panduga in Andhra Pradesh, lohri. People celebrate these festival by flying kites in North India. Hence it is also known as a kite flying festival. In different states different kind of special dishes people cook during these festival.

As per Hindu Holy Scriptures, Lord Surya forgave his son Shani and hence Shani visits lord Surya on Sankranti day. On these auspicious time, people take a holy dip in the sacred rivers to wash away their sins. They also gives sweets to family members, relatives, neighbours and colleagues. Everyone wish each other to be sweet and forgiving. To let go all the anger, frustrations and negative feelings. A famous Marathi line which is said while giving the sweets,Til gul ghya god god bola it means take a sweet jaggery and sesame seeds to speak only sweet words. Eating sesame seeds and jaggery in this season is consider good for overall health.

People prey to Sun god to get good harvest, success and happiness. Most people celebrate this festival by flying kites on this day. In many houses sweets are distributed every where. People visit holy places like Prayag and Gangasagar to take part in the Kumbh Mela. As per Bhavishyapuran we should keep fast on Makar Sankranti. Also one should take a bath in the mixture of sesame and water. It would be highly beneficial if a person take a holy bath in the river Ganges. After bath you can perform Puja for lord Surya. The most auspicious time for Puja this year is 2:00 am to 2:24 am.
